In Peru, Bolivia and Ecuador today
there are many living legacies of the Incas, especially in the rural
highlands.
Their communities continue to be organized along the lines of the
ancient ayllus (a group of
related families who
share land crops and animals). Many still think of the world as
being divided into four quarters. Each region has
its own distinctive head-gear, just as in Inca days when the emperors
decreed different head-dresses for every
rank and every province. Notice how the interesting head-dresses
in the pictures above and below are notably
different than those seen at the Pisac
market (page 10).
Looking beyond the colonial
pillars of the church is a beautiful view of the agricultural terraces,
Inca walls and the Urubamba valley in the distance.
The Iglesia de Chinchero church has
been restored to reveal the interior paintings in all their glory.
The ceiling, beams and walls are covered in beautiful floral and
religious designs.

second eventful day in Peru
